BIOGRAPHY No amount of popularity, no arbitrary number of friendships, was ever enough. Josiah was charming, a dating preteen with instincts to get him by, but there was something missing when he took Annalise ice skating, or Kate to the movies, or Courtney to the batting cages. His parents thought he was doing alright for himself when they saw the way he weaseled his way in for a kiss on the cheek, and even stepped it up to a kiss on the lips when he thought no one was looking. On the surface he was Mr. Popularity. Not the greatest player on any team, but a strong contender- a pretty boy in a uniform, a quick runner and a fast thinker. He was a wild card, ready to save a play on the fly, or totally send it into the ground when he deviated from the plan and sent the whole team into chaos. Chaos was always just a few moments away with Josiah except when he was online. Online he could be anyone, share anything, and get to know intimate facts about everyone around him. His online identity as Houston-native Dawn started as a prank when he was thirteen after a pickup game at recess ended in a shouting match, then a physical altercation. He was shoved to the ground and held, the aggressor, Hagen, throwing a punch straight into his stomach. Josiah's eyes had welled with tears, his body coiling against the other students who held him down. Hagen had laughed. And then the teacher arrived, reprimanding the both of them. That night Josiah, peeking at the bruised skin under his shirt in his mirror, decided revenge was the only way. So, he created Dawn, a student who lived in his old neighborhood across Houston. Slowly at first, he interjected Dawn into the social media circles he spent the least amount of time in. Soon the school was buzzing with talk of who was dating the attractive Dawn. But the moment he'd wanted so badly when it all started- the moment he could reveal to Hagen that it was him who'd strung the other boy along, that Hagen hadn't gotten an attractive girl to love him, that moment never came. Josiah got more invested in it, making friends and having conversations he'd never have as himself. It was official: he felt like he was Dawn just as much as he was Josiah. And then, Josiah was just that guy packing up his belongings to move to Florida so his career military father could work at a technologically-oriented military contract near their soon-to-be-home. |
