BIOGRAPHY Neil didn't spent much time living his life, so much as floating through it. He managed perfectly average grades, and not a single step beyond. Played football through high school, but lacked the drive to take it further. This was the basic pattern that defined his growth; achievement mired in self-imposed mediocrity. Would he have proved adept? Was he ordinary to begin with? The truth would go unknown, and he didn't care one way or another. After graduation he began work at a family friend's auto body shop. His family was too poor to put him through college, and honestly he had never given thought to secondary education anyway. Neil had always just taken for granted that he would go straight into the work force, and so it was. He remembers that year fondly, for the most part. Nothing spectacular happened, but nothing needed to. He just floated, as usual. It was the same dull life he'd always lived. With one particular exception. Neil's father was a journalist. Not a big shot, but a good one, he liked to believe. And he was on to something big. What, he never discovered. He just knew that one day he came home, and his dad was dead. The house was in dissaray, and the police determined it was a burglary gone bad, resulting in Mr Garcia being stabbed when he surprised the intruder. Except that, in addition to the expected missing items, it seemed they had taken his notes. The laptop was understandable, but the loose papers in his writing desk were ersatz as well. Neil couldn't work out why that might be, and the cops didn't seem to care one way or another. It wasn't until much later, after the grieving and the attempts to get on with his life, that he was contacted by an old co-worker of his father. Instructed to meet her somewhere out of the way, she brought up the possibility that the notes were the target of the burglary in the first place. That they were the reason he died at all. Neil, still seeking peace in his life, angrily rejected the notion at the time. But as it stewed in his head, it became more reasonable. No, reasonable wasn't the right word. It was absolutely, utterly nightmarish if such a thing could happen. But it made a certain sense, and it explained the oddities that he could not. What was his father working on? What was worth killing over? For the first time in his life, Neil found motivation. He enrolled in the police academy, and while he once again was not top of his class, he did well enough to not wash out. Maybe it would turn out as pointless as everything else in his life. Maybe there was nothing to be done. But maybe the opposite was true. Maybe he would be the one to find answers, and to do something when they were presented. He doesn't actively search, and perhaps that's why he's lived as long as he has despite his goals. But he keeps one eye open, ever on the lookout for the one thing that can make the difference. How much longer can he float, now that he's taken on this weight? |
