BIOGRAPHY Olivia never particularly cared about other people. Sure, she acknowledged their existence. Spoke to them. Even had something akin to 'fun' with them. But ultimately, she could never say they truly mattered to her. Though, that probably went for most things in her life. Growing up, she was smart, beautiful, witty, popular, and bored out of her skull.Graduating was not an issue. Neither were the four years of college that came later. A major in political science and a minor in economics. Almost on a whim - a dangerous thing to do with one's future - she chose to pursue law. There was a bit of logic to it, of course. Olivia wanted a challenge. She wanted to be challenged. She could find that in business or politics, if such things suited her, but the law had a certain gravitas to it. The competition, the setting of precedents. It was in the courts that even the littlest people could take on corporations and governments, if the timing was right. The thought thrilled her. By the time she was twenty four, she had passed her bar exam and was licensed to practice in the state of Florida. She had no interest in prosecution, and no firms were looking for young blood at the time, so Olivia plied her trade for the public defender's office. And it was unbearably boring. Every day she must have seen to over a hundred cases, her role in each one minimal. On most days she was lucky to have ten minutes with her client; just long enough to convince them to take a plea. The occasional bail hearings let her see the inside of a courtroom, but they were always fleeting. Perhaps it was because she had expectations, but more than ever, the boredom was crushing. One day, something did change. Looking over the file for her next case, she saw something she had seen many times before: a flimsy argument and a deal for jail time from the presiding prosecutor. It was an absolute joke. They had nothing solid, and so they hoped to put her client in prison with minimal effort. So many times she had overlooked it, advising others to plead out rather than roll the dice in court and potentially land a larger sentence. But this time, she was feeling bold. When Olivia met the man in lockup, she told him only the facts; the state had a case, but it was not a perfect case. He could bow his head and accept the scraps they offered, or she could fight on his behalf. A month later, they stood before judge and jury. It was hardly the trial of the century. A young ADA faced her, likely as inexperienced as she was. Olivia wasn't being taken seriously, and she took it as far as she could go. It was ludicrous, handling both a criminal trial and her daily workflow. But at the end of the day, all she had to do was give the jury doubt. To see the evidence presented, and poke some fine holes in it. She lacked the resources to gather expert testemony, but she discredit and suspicion on that which existed. She tried, and she won. Her case was not a great one, but it turned some heads. And some of those heads were quite lofty indeed. See, while her client was a nobody, even nobodies have to answer to someone. He was a minor pawn in someone's greater plan, left for dead when his role went south. In other words, some faceless champion of the unwashed masses had exceeded his expectations, and there was always work for such people. And so, a mere two years after passing the bar, Olivia opened her own private practice. In the three years that have followed since, she has made quite a name for herself. From her showy hair to her finely manicured nails, she's a sight to behold in any court. She mostly handles cases for the wealthy and their family (rich kids ruin their lives too, after all) but she's no Johnny Cochran yet, and her lofty patrons don't pass her nearly enough work to justify being too exclusive. If you're facing criminal charges, and you can foot her bill, she might just win your case. Of course, the part the papers don't talk about is the ruthless means she'll take to win. It's nothing too extreme, but sometimes she'll end up with info she really shouldn't have, or a piece of evidence goes missing. What can she say? She has a duty to her clients. |
